Eskom 'has done nothing' over past 18 months, says energy expert

Energy expert Ted Blom says Eskom has failed to deliver on its promise to bring an end to the constant rolling blackouts.

"If Eskom management just done what they promised the public they were going to do in January last year, saying they would refurbish all the power stations in 18 months, when the fact of the matter is they have done nothing. They have just kept on cut and paste repairs, and the rest of the money is just being squandered on extra corruption."

The country was plunged into stage 4 power cuts Wednesday afternoon due to more unit breakdowns.

The beleaguered power utility will also implement stage 3 load shedding on Thursday.

With more cold winter months ahead, Blom says the question we should be asking is: Will Eskom make a plan or are things going to get worse?

"Stage 4 load shedding roughly comes at a cost to the economy of at least R5 billion per day, lost economic activity. If we go to stage 6 the consequences will be worse and for the homeowner, it means effective you are going to be without power for half of the day."
