The cash-strapped SOE says it was forced to implement stage 2 load shedding on Thursday evening due to several generating units going offline.

Eskom will implement power cuts from 22:00 on Thursday until 05:00 on Friday.

Spokesperson Dikatso Motae says the time will be utilised to replenish their water and diesel reserves.

“Today (Thursday) we lost three additional generation units and had to use our emergency reserves in order to meet demand throughout the day.”

She says their reserves are critically low and will need to be replenished overnight.

Motae couldn’t indicate whether Friday and the weekend will also be hit by the rolling blackouts.

“We will be in a better position to tell you what will happen with the rest of the day once the reserves have been replenished.”
