Eskom takes over load shedding from ‘noncompliant’ Ekurhuleni
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
Eskom will, in future, control load shedding in Ekurhuleni and not the municipality.
The power utility will implement the planned power cuts after accusing the municipality of failing to comply with the load shedding schedule, adding further pressure on an already strained grid.
Eskom claims its warnings to the municipality have fallen on deaf ears.
Previously, the city was only permitted to load shed substations that feed critical loads, and upon request, Eskom handed over the implementation to the municipality.
“Although Eskom notes the city’s technical challenges in executing load shedding, it is left with no choice but to implement load shedding for the city as its non-compliance puts further strain on the already contained national grid,” said Eskom spokesperson Amanda Qithi.
“Failure to implement load shedding by municipalities affects the integrity and stability of the grid, which may lead to higher stages of load shedding.”
The country was on stage 4 load shedding on Tuesday, with the power utility urging members of the public to assist in reducing demand by switching off non-essential appliances such as geysers and pool pumps.
