Eskom unable to confirm Molefe's R30m payout
Updated | By Marius van der Walt
Power utility Eskom says the only way to verify the reported R30 million payout supposedly given to former CEO Brian Molefe is through its annual report.
The Sunday Times alleges that Molefe received R30 million despite being at the utility for only 18 months.
Molefe left Eskom under a cloud, following the Public Protector’s State of Capture report. He was mentioned in the report due to his relationship with the controversial Gupta family, having paid multiple visits to their Saxonworld home. He has since been sworn in as an ANC Member of Parliament.
The newspaper says it saw documents detailing the alleged payment being made on March 23, which named it variously as “severance” pay and an “Eskom pension fund” payment.
But Eskom's Khulu Phasiwe says it's impossible to know if the report is accurate.
"The annual report will only come out in June/July this year. I am therefore unable to say anything on the matter until the official results are audited.
"They (Sunday Times) say they heard from their sources and I don't know if their sources are correct. Most of the time they get it wrong anyway."
