Eskom has urged residents to switch off non-essential appliances in order to reduce pressure on the national grid.

The cash-strapped state-owned entity says several plant breakdowns in Mozambique resulted in a possibility of load shedding on Tuesday evening.

“A loss of about 1000 MV from Mozambique where the Cahora Bassa power plant has also experienced technical faults,” says spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe.

According to Phasiwe, technicians are working around the clock to restore faults at the power stations.

Eskom will now use diesel and its pumped storage scheme to avoid load shedding.

“Our technicians from Mozambique are working hard to restore power supply for their side but at this stage the risk is very high.”
