Eskom warns public about scam
Updated | By ANA
Eskom on Friday warned the public to not fall victim to an “Eskom franchise” scam.
Eskom has distanced itself from a phishing scheme “where criminals claim that Eskom is offering franchise opportunities for the distribution of prepaid electricity vending machines,” the power utility said.
Eskom said in this scam, “con artists claim that the distributors would be able to resell electricity at a price that they would determine themselves”.
The company said this is not true as “electricity prices in South Africa are determined by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) and no reseller is allowed to put any mark ups”.
Eskom urged members of the public to not pay heed to this scam, and not to interact or deal with the SA Tendergate website as this is “a phishing scheme” and all Eskom business opportunities are “advertised on its own website, www.eskom.co.za”.
