Close to 31 municipal workers in the City of eThekwini in
KwaZulu-Natal have been arrested following Thursday’s violent protest.
City of eThekwini Metro Police spokesperson, Parboo Sewpersad, says the arrested workers are expected to appear in the local magistrates’ court on Friday morning.
Sewpersad says among others, the workers are facing charges of attempted murder after live ammunition was fired at police.
“The charges that the 31 workers face are attempted murder, public violence, malicious damage to property and contraventions of the road traffic act,” says Sewpersad.
Sewpersad says some police officers were injured while trying to disperse the workers.
He has also dismissed allegations that police shot and killed one of the protesting workers.
Sewpersad says the protest was about the grading of some employees at the municipality.
