Etzebeth’s Equality Court case halted amid High Court application
Updated | By Lulutho Mkosi
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has confirmed that its Equality Court case against Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth has been temporarily suspended.
The World Cup winner is accused of assault and using a racial insult during an altercation in a pub in Langebaan in August.
The commission submitted papers for a hate speech case against Etzebeth in the Equality Court on behalf of the victims, known as the Langebaan Four.
But in October, Etzebeth applied to review and set aside the commission's decision to institute legal proceedings against him.

The commission’s chairperson Bongani Majola says Equality Court has decided to suspend the case pending the High Court application.
“The first case is the Equality Court case, that has been brought against Mr Etzebeth. In that case the magistrate comes through saying that because of the review application Mr Etzebeth has filed, he is going to put a hold on the Equality Court.
“So, nothing is happening on the side of the Equality Court at the moment. It’s not that it has been thrown out, but the court has stopped its activity on it.”
