Executors distribute Mandela’s estate

Despite media reports the executors of late former President Nelson Mandela's will say there was no infighting amongst family members.

Executors of Mandela's estate distributed the cash bequests, in accordance with Mandela's will on Friday. 


The cash bequests distributed amount to R22 million and were done publicly in favour of transparency. 


The executors said Mandela was a public figure and was in favour of full transparency in the winding up of his estate.   


Among the executors of Mandela's estate were Former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke, Mandela's lawyer and struggle stalwart George Bizos 


The executors stated that no assets were sold in order to pay the bequests. 


Among the recipients were Mandela's driver Michael Maponya, Fort Hare University and Orlando West High in Soweto


Some other bequest will be distributed electronically, such as the one going to Mandela's personal assistant Zelda La Grange. 


Following the distribution of bequests, the executors will attend to the transfer of movable and immovable property. 


Some funds will also be moved to various trusts to take care of the family. 


Mandela's Qunu home has been left out, because his former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is contesting ownership of the property in the courts.


“The deceased home, situated in Qunu, and the removable assets thereof, which includes cattle and other farming implements, have been left out of the account. We are anticipate preparing a lodge with the master of the court and deal with Qunu home once the dispute between the executors and mamaWinnie Madikizela-Mandela has been resolved,” said Moseneke.
