Expect more SOPA rhetoric from Makhura: analyst

North West University Professor Barry Hanyane says Gauteng Premier David Makhura is likely to repeat some of his promises on service delivery in the province.
Makhura will deliver his latest State of the Province Address in Brixton on Monday.
The speech comes amid rising unemployment in the province, anger over illegal immigration and a health system buckling under the pressure of Covid-19 and a fast-growing population.
“He is likely to follow suit the examples set by the North West premier for instance; talk rhetoric, don’t give facts, you don’t talk to the urgency of solutions needed and hardly propose solutions for fear of retribution, especially coming from the tripartite alliance. The question should be doing these provincial commitments require taxpayers to fund them?
“If you rely on promises rather than giving real sustainable jobs are we not brewing recipe for Arab spring as we saw in the July 2021 unrest?”
Makhura’s address follows a chastening local election for the ANC in the province.
It lost Tshwane, Johannesburg, and Ekurhuleni municipalities in the last local government elections to a DA-led coalition.
Makhura’s spokesperson Vuyo Mhaga said the premier will outline the service delivery action plan for 2022 and address the job losses in the province due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The review will address progress made since the beginning of the sixth administration up to so far and it will also combine the fifth administration. Special focus will be on the high growth areas developed, the Specialised Economic Zones and the Township Economy Bill.”
