Ramaphosa: Extended forensic lab in Gqeberha ‘to put criminals behind bars’
Updated | By Mapaballo Borotho
President Cyril Ramaphosa says the extended forensic laboratory in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape is expected to speed up the clearing of the backlog in DNA analysis.
Ramaphosa visited the laboratory on Thursday.
He said the lab should expedite investigations and help police build strong cases that will lead to the conviction of perpetrators of especially gender-based violence and femicide.
"We depend on this and other forensic science laboratory to indeed make sure that people who commit crimes against women and children are put behind bars,” Ramaphosa told a Women in Law Enforcement Parade.
"It is impressive that the construction and the upgrade of this facility, which started during Covid-19 in 2021, was completed six months ahead of the estimated completion time. It was done under budget. This shows real progress," said Ramaphosa.
