Families of Enyobeni victims want owner prosecuted for murder

The families of the victims of the Enyobeni tavern tragedy in East London are calling for the owners to be prosecuted for murder.

The call was made in a memorandum to the National Prosecuting Authority following Friday's court appearance of Siyakwamkela and Vuyokazi Ndevu, who are charged with liquor-related offences.
They pleaded not guilty and the matter was postponed to the 25th of April next year.
Presenting the memorandum to the NPA outside court on behalf of the families, representative Nkululeko Ncandana read out the demands, to which authorities have seven days to respond.
He explains why the families believe the Ndevu's need to face tougher charges.
"We believe that they are ultimately responsible for the harm that was inflicted that night and that day and should be prosecuted as such. In the event that criminal conduct cannot be attributed directly to them, our children did not die of natural causes and we demand that an inquest be held in terms of section 5 of the Inquest Act.
“Finding closure and concrete answers as to what happened to our children is of paramount importance to us," says Ncandana.
Meanwhile, the families also called for state authorities to be held accountable for what happened at the tavern in June.
He said this for allowing the reckless sale of alcohol by the owners of Enyobeni tavern.
"We now place our faith in the judicial system that it will do all the necessary to get to the bottom of what took the lives of our children on that fateful night and caused so many injuries to so many families.”
