The two boys, who have been identified by their families in a joint statement as Zukiso Majoa and Njabulo Ndhlebe, were reported to have been involved in an argument before the tragic incident.

But the two families released a statement on Friday in an attempt to explain the sequence of events.

It is alleged that Majola shot Ndhlebe behind the ear, before turning the gun on himself.

The incident took place on Wednesday at Majola’s home, while the boys and a third friend had snuck out of school during breaktime.

Family spokesperson Sibusiso Nkabane says the loaded gun belonged to Majola’s late grandfather.

“When they got home, Majola showed his friends his grandfather’s gun, which he took from his December holidays without the knowledge of his parents.

“In an attempt to impress his friends, Majola took the unloaded revolver and loaded the gun and started playing with it. While playing with the pistol, the gun accidentally went off, shooting Ndhlebe behind his ear.”

After the shooting, the family alleges that the third friend ran away because of panic which alarmed the community.

“In shock and panic, the third unnamed friend ran off to his house around the corner and Majola rushed after his friend asking him to assist. The gunshot and the boys running away raised attention at the neighbors and so the community members of Chief Albert Luthuli park came out to confront the boys of the matter,” adds Nkabane

“In panic and fear, Majola then ran away, back to his home. When he got home, again in panic and fear, he closed the garage door and used the same gun to shoot himself in the head.”

A memorial service for the two boys will be held at Lesiba Secondary School on Tuesday.
