There have two incidents in the province over the weekend.

A man drowned at Thompson's Bay on the north coast on Sunday.

Reports from the scene are that a wave washed his child off a rock in the afternoon.

"It is reported a family had been taking photographs on the rocks when a wave washed a child into the surf," says Medi Response's Paul Herbst.

"The father dived in after the child and managed to pass her to a relative. He then got into distress and was swept away.

"Despite extensive advanced life support attempts to resuscitate the man, resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful and the man was declared dead on scene."

At Durban's North Beach, a woman and her daughter had to be rescued while they were swimming on Saturday morning.

Netcare 911's Shawn Herbst says according to lifeguards, are that the pair got into difficulty in the water.

"Ethekwini lifeguards who witnessed the swimmers in distress were quick to respond and managed to pull both swimmers to shore.

"When medics arrived on scene, they found both patients on the beach. The mother was in a stable condition and declined any treatment, however the 10-year-old child had ingested seawater and was in severe respiratory distress.

"The young girl was treated on scene by Netcare 911 emergency care practitioners and once stabilised was transported to hospital for further care."
