Limpopo police spokesperson Motlafela Mojapelo says the bodies of the children were found at two different locations in ga-Phasha Selatole village, near Mecklenburg.

"The suspect allegedly informed a neighbour on Tuesday morning about the murders and also pointed out the locations of the shallow graves.

"The police were then informed and on arrival, the lifeless bodies of three children aged 9, 7 and 5 were found in the nearby bushes, and that of a three-year-old was found next to the local mountain, at about 3 kilometres from the first scene," says Mojapelo.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the suspect stopped the scholar transport the children were travelling in after school on Monday afternoon.

Mojapelo says the driver knew the father and therefore stopped and allowed the children to go with their father.

Three of the children were found with stab wounds and the youngest 3-year-old was found with open wounds.

Mojapelo says the motive for the murder is not known at this stage and four counts murder have been opened.

The father was arrested during a roadblock on Tuesday night and is expected to appear in the Mecklenburg Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Police investigations are continuing.
