Fawu calls on police to assist in Neil Agget inquest

The Food and Allied Workers Union (Fawu) has called on the police at the Johannesburg Central police station to hand over any records that could assist in determining the cause of death of late anti-apartheid activist Neil Aggett.

Fawu members marched to the police station, formerly known as John Vorster Square, on Wednesday to hand over amemorandum to the South African Police Service.

The march coincided with the commemoration of Agget’s death on February 5, 1982.

‘’If there are any records in this station and if there’s any type of information, they need to hand it over to the National Prosecuting Authority so they can be presented before the judge in court.

“If there are still people who may be alive and have any information, then they need to come forward,” said Fawu provincial secretary Vuka Chonco.

Wednesday marked the 38th anniversary of Aggett’s death while in custody at the notorious John Vorster Square.

Aggett, who was also a medical doctor, was found hanging in his cell after days of severe torture. An apartheid-era inquest found that he committed suicide, but another inquest has now been established to look into his death.
