FF Plus elections head Wouter Wessels warned that there's still a long way to go.

"It's still early, half of the votes must still come in but it is a very good position to be in, especially if you take into account that we are far fast the number of votes we had in 2014.

"I'm carefully optimistic."

He added: "It shows that our message was acceptable to a large portion of South Africans and that a lot of South Africans do regard us and our manifesto as providing solutions to the various problems facing South Africa.

"Throughout the campaign we were told by voters phoning into our call centre, phoning into our offices, when we did door to door, all our activists reported that a lot of people that they will vote FF Plus this time, they previously voted DA."

Launched in March, the party’s manifesto focuses on job creation and the promotion of language right.

It has also taken a strong stance against land expropriation.
