Fight against racism starts at home: Hatang

In order to conquer racism, the strategy needs to begin at home.

This is according to the CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang, at the launch of the concept for an Anti-Racism Week in March by the Anti-Racism Network of South Africa (ARNSA).

ARNSA, which represents more than 80 national organisations, launched its concept in Houghton on Tuesday.

ARNSA was launched in November last year as a response to incidents of racism that are becoming more apparent and has called for a multi-pronged approach to the fight against racism that is prevalent not only in people's homes, but in the boardrooms of companies as well.

Sello Hatang says transformation will only happen when people change their attitudes towards black people.

"Racism happens in our homes, because your child reacts to how you react when you are watching TV...and you see President [Jacob] Zuma do anything and you say 'that's black' people...children then get it ingrained and that is the knowledge in the blood. Until such time that we start dealing with it in our homes, we are going nowhere," he said.
