At least seven people, including a factory owner, were killed when a fire broke out at a garment factory in Dhaka, officials said Thursday.

The fire broke out late Wednesday at the ground floor of Tung Hai Sweater Factory, housed in an 11-storey building in Dhaka's Mirpur neighbourhood, leaving six others injured, said Ali Ahmed Khan, director general of the city's firefighting department. Those killed included the factory's owner Mahbubur Rahman and a senior officer of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, who were believed to be in a meeting on the 10th floor.

Firefighters took two hours to extinguish the blaze, which may have been sparked by a short circuit, Khan said. The factory was closed when the fire broke out, said Atiqul Islam, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association. "We will launch an investigation into the incident," he said. The accident took place as rescuers were still searching the rubble of a collapsed eight-story building that housed mostly garment factories, in Savar, 25 kilometers north-west of Dhaka. The Rana Plaza building collapsed on April 24, killing more than 800 people and injuring at least 2,400.
