Fire causes extensive damage to Unisa building

Tshwane emergency services say the blaze broke out on the second floor of the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Building after midnight on Wednesday.
Firefighters who attended to the incident forced open three wooden doors and two steel doors to gain access into the building.
Security personnel also assisted by using access cards to open security doors.
“Firefighters managed to locate the seat of the fire inside the building after battling to open multiple doors and going through stacks of files, books, and furniture,” said Tshwane emergency’s Charles Mabaso.
He says most of the second floor suffered extensive smoke and water damage, while parts of the third floor also suffered smoke damage.
Mabaso says firefighters found stacks of books and files that were smoldering in various places on the second floor and extinguished them.
“According to sources at the scene, a fire had broken out in the same building about two weeks ago and was extinguished by the staff, and the emergency services were never notified,” Mabaso added.
The cost of the damage has not been quantified, and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
