This will be the first women’s parliament of the sixth administration.

The deputy chairperson of the national council of provinces (NCOP), Sylvia Lucas, says the conference will also provide a response to the rising incidents of gender-based violence in the country.

“The conference is aimed at launching a comprehensive programme of provincial sessions to make sure that we get women’s inputs in reviewing the Women’s Charter for Effective Equality. We will also be celebrating 25 years over the same charter,” says Lucas.

“Women came from a background of triple oppression. Women came from a background of disenfranchisement.”

Lucas says the input made by women during the sitting will be consolidated to form a new charter that will reflect issues faced by women.
