Five arrested for dagga smuggling in Mpumalanga

Five suspects are due to appear in court soon after they were caught smuggling dagga into the country at the Nerston and Oshoek borders posts respectively.

Mpumalanga police say the drugs have a total street value of more than R233 000.  


“The breakthrough was made where two male suspects were arrested aged 27 from the Kingdom of Eswatini whilst the other aged 48 a South African citizen. The duo got arrested next to Oshoek Port of Entry in the early hours of Sunday on charges of dealing in dagga,” police said in a statement.


The dagga has an estimated street value of about R 54 000.


The two suspects are due to appear at the Elukwatini Magistrate's Court on Monday.  


Meanwhile, three suspects were nabbed in a separate incident near the Nerston border on Saturday.


“Thirty-three bags filled with ganja were found,” police said.


“They too were charged for dealing in dagga. The ganja is said to be weighing 42,48 kilograms and it is to the estimated street value of about R 178 416. The vehicle in this incident was also confiscated as well as the dagga as part of the investigation.”


The trio is expected to appear at the Amsterdam Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
