Five men were arrested in Umhlanga Rocks near Durban on Thursday and charged with possession of suspected stolen property and attempted murder, said KwaZulu-Natal police.
Police had noticed their suspicious-looking vehicle around the Gateway area, said Captain Thulani Zwane.
The men sped off when police approached the car in an attempt to investigate.
"Police gave chase and the suspects shot towards the police and the members returned fire," said Zwane.
After a lengthy chase, the men were arrested near a petrol station in Durban North.
"Two of them sustained gunshot wounds and were taken for treatment," said Zwane.
The vehicle the men were travelling in had been stolen in the Berea area.
It contained goods suspected to have also been stolen.
The group was expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court soon.
