Five injured in Braamfontein gas explosion

Johannesburg emergency services have confirmed that five people were injured in a fire in Braamfontein.

Emergency services spokesperson Nana Radebe Kgiba says it's believed Egoli Gas employees were working on the scene.
"The information that we received is that employees of Egoli Gas were working when the truck and the building in front of them caught fire. The five injured people were taken to different medical facilities around the city."
City Manager Floyd Brink said the city has already met with the managing director of Egoli Gas.
"He is clear they will be issuing a statement. Indeed, it's an accident on their part. We have agreed that we will be working closely with them so that in an unlikely event there must always be one of our EMS teams on standby."
Joburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda said Egoli Gas was doing maintenance to avoid any further explosions.
"This was an unfortunate maintenance-related error that happened from a private company that did get authorisation from the city. It was in line with our commitment to ensure that we eradicate the problem completely."
Radebe Kgiba says the city will conduct preliminary investigations into the cause of the fire.
