A pedestrian died in Klapmuts, a driver and two passengers were killed in Caledon, and the occupant of a vehicle in Clanwilliam, spokesman Al-Ameen Kafaar said in a statement.

No further details were provided on the accidents, and attempts to reach Kafaar were unsuccessful.

In the statement, he said roadblocks were held across the province and 3027 vehicles were stopped.

"A total 1342 drivers were screened for driving under the influence of alcohol, resulting in 18 arrests," he said.

"The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Mossel Bay, at 1.29mg/1000ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24mg/1000ml."

Kafaar said 523 speeding offences were recorded, the highest being 186km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 in Brackenfell.
A total of 274 fines were issued for various traffic violations.
