On Monday, Sindisiwe Manqele’s lawyer said her rights were infringed because she made her statement to police without having a legal representative present.

SA Police Service investigating officer and constable Seile Shadrick Malaka, stationed at the Alexandra police station, said at the time Manqele stated that she understood and wished to continue because she would only need legal assistance in court.

Manqele’s lawyer Norman Makhubela said she must have felt pressured to make a statement at that moment because she marked on the document that she needed legal assistance. Malaka said there was a mistake on the document and he had corrected it.

Manqele has pleaded not guilty and instead claimed she was defending herself from her violent lover when she stabbed him at his home on March 9.

Makhubela stated that Manqele’s evidence would show that she walked with a limp because she had been pushed by Habedi.

Habedi, a member of hip-hop group Skwatta Kamp, was stabbed to death at his home in Alexandra in March. The popular musician was stabbed in the chest.

On Tuesday, the African National Congress Women’s League welcomed the court case and said it remained resolute and unshaken in the belief of a society free from all kinds of abuse, crime and acts of injustice against any form of human kind.

“More so that we should take lead at the front through noble illustrations, even if such acts are committed by our very own leaders or members of the African National Congress we still remain unshaken and believe that if found guilty in the eyes of the law, fibrous measures should be tightened at all levels against such insidious acts,” the ANCWL said in a statement issued Tuesday.

The league sent condolences to Habedi’s family.
