Fleeing taxi driver among 21 nabbed at Grasmere roadblock

A taxi driver who attempted to evade the police was one of 21 people arrested at the N1 Grasmere Toll Plaza on Friday.

The driver was stopped at a major roadblock while Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula was briefing the media on Easter weekend road statistics.
The driver attempted to flee but to no avail.
"As soon as the vehicle came to a halt he ran away,” said the Road Traffic Management Corporation's Zola Majavu.
“It turned out that he was a holder, according to his claims, of a learner’s license which he did not have in his possession. He is supposed to be driving with a Public Driving Permit, which he cannot have, as he does not have a license and the license disc of the taxi expired three years ago."

Majavu added that another person was nabbed for attempted bribery.
"The person produced a permit that appeared to be fraudulent and when the officers interrogated the person further, he tried to bribe them. A big truck was pulled over and the driver was arrested and truck impounded because the front deck of the truck was overloaded.”
The employers of some of the suspects will also be added to the cases as accomplices to a crime.
