Flooding at substation leaves key Tshwane buildings in the dark
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The substation, housed in the basement of the Gauteng provincial government building, got flooded last week Wednesday.
Some of the affected buildings and streets included the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, Pretoria Central Police Station, National Department of Social Development, and residents living on Kgosi Mampuru, Madiba, and WF Nkomo streets.
City spokesperson Selby Bokaba says technicians are on the scene.
"The city’s team of technicians is busy draining out the water so that the water level can be below the substation level. Initially, the water level was at 2300 millilitres high and now it’s sitting at 300 millilitres, which is an indication of good progress made towards draining out the water.
"This process is expected to be completed this evening."
Once the water has been drained the city will be able to assess the extent of the damage.
"Immediately after the draining process, the team will commence with the assessment of the damage which will include drying and testing of the panels,” Bokaba says.
“Because water has entered the switch gears, the team needs to replace oil as a precautionary measure. The electrical work will only commence after the pumping out of the water. Currently, all is going well, and it is anticipated that the team will conclude all the repair work by Thursday morning."
