Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
First National Bank is reporting its consumers spent over R3 billion on Black Friday, the highest spending reported in four years.
Thousands of South African shoppers took advantage of bargain deals last week, with over R2.4 billion spent in-store and R670 million spent on online shopping.
Head of Business Development at FNB Ashley Saffy says most consumers spent money on travel, transportation, groceries, clothing and entertainment.
Long-life milk, toilet paper and air fryers were the big sellers over the Black Friday weekend as well.
"Black Friday spend from FNB customers amounted to over R3 billion in spend, which is a record high. It is 21% higher than Black Friday last year.
"From a card-present perspective, we saw a 18% increase in-store shopping and a 30% e-commerce online spend increase. We have seen a 39% increase in travel spend as well as a massive increase on digital and technology."
