5 things you need to know about health in Gauteng


- Gauteng has constructed 11 new clinics and community health centres over the past two years 

- Funding has been provided to 45 substance-abuse treatment centres 

- Gauteng government aims to establish an electronic patient record system in all public hospitals by 2019 

- Harnessing ICT in health (e-Health) has resulted in 60 hospitals having scanned medical records 

- The number of people in Gauteng on antiretroviral treatment exceeds 750 000 per year


Gauteng Premier David Makhura on public health facilities in the province:


"The percentage of pregnant women who attend antenatal visits before twenty weeks has improved steadily which has contributed to a decline in maternal deaths. The 2015 Gauteng City-Region Quality of Life Survey found that 72% of respondents are either 'very satisfied' or 'satisfied' with the level of care they receive from Gauteng public health facilities."
