'Food poisoning' bigger than spaza shops - Motsoaledi
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says the food poisoning crisis is linked to more than just spaza shops and street vendors.
He answered questions in the National Assembly on Wednesday.
More than 20 children have died in Gauteng in suspected food poisoning incidents.
Six of the children died in Soweto, with a toxicology report confirming the presence of Terbufos, an organophosphate chemical, in the children.
"That's why police have sent a group of detectives to find out, did anybody become negligent or has it just happened accidentally?” Motsoaledi asked.
"I can assure you that this problem goes far beyond spaza shops in the country."
Two people have since been arrested following the incidents.
Motsoaledi said investigation will indicate what regulation has been contravened, whether health or agriculture regulations.
President Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation this week on the government’s plans to curb the spate of deaths linked to food poisoning.
