Foot-and-mouth detected on Limpopo farm
Updated | By Lulutho Mkosi
A farm in the Molemole District of Limpopo has been quarantined after state veterinarian services detected foot-and-mouth disease in a herd of cattle.
The Onderstepoort Veterinary Research Transboundary Animal Disease Programme conducted a series of tests after being alerted of clinical signs suspicious of the disease.
The signs of FMD include sores in the mouth of animals causing reluctance to eat and lameness.

However, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development spokesperson Reggie Ngcobo reiterates the disease cannot be transferred to humans.
“The farm is located in the previously foot-and-mouth disease zone of South Africa. There is only one farm at this stage from the samples we have collected.”
