Ford resumes production in Tshwane as power returns
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Ford has confirmed that it has resumed manufacturing after it was forced to suspend production at the Silverton plant due to a prolonged power outage.
The outage was caused by the collapse of 132KV powerlines on the N4 on Sunday which led to blackouts in large parts of Pretoria East and North this week.
The outage meant millions of rand in lost revenue for the auto giant, as it was forced suspend the production of some 720 vehicles a day.
Its 4500 workers also had to stay at home.
"Power has since been restored in stages, starting on the evening of April 12, and production has slowly resumed. The estimated total loss of production to date is 1440 unit,” the company said in a statement on Friday.
"Due to the scale of the Eskom infrastructure concern, there remains some risk of interrupted supply - however we continue to liaise with Eskom and local government as they work to balance the system and fully restore the network."
The plant produces Ford Ranger, VW Amarok model under contract for Volkswagen for customers not only in South Africa but in America, Europe, Korea, Africa, the Middle East and other regions.
