Foreigners leave Primrose police station

There was a group of about 50. They went back to their informal settlements, Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said on Thursday.

 

The xenophobic violence that started in KwaZulu-Natal last week, in which five people were killed, spread to central Johannesburg on Wednesday. Shop owners and street vendors closed their stores, bricks were thrown at cars, and some shops were looted.

 

Dlamini said six people were arrested for breaking into a shop near the Jeppe mens hostel.

 

Police were there quickly and nothing was stolen.

 

Other incidents

 

Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said a shop was looted on Jules Street in Malvern, but it was not clear if the business was owned by a foreigner or a local. No arrests have been made.

 

Meanwhile, metro police believe they prevented an armed robbery when they arrested two men with an unlicensed firearm in Alexandra on Wednesday.

 

Minnaar said the white Mazda they were travelling in was pulled over after officers received a tip off.

 

The two would appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court soon.

 

Officers would also try and establish if the weapon was used in other crimes.
