Forest High suspect granted bail

The 19-year-old Forest High School pupil accused of stabbing a fellow learner to death last week has been granted bail of R5000.

Muhammad Mawela appeared at the Johannesburg Magistrates Court for a formal bail application on Monday.

The suspect faces a charge of murder and two of attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed a fellow learner to death outside the school last week Monday.

Two other pupils were injured in the attack.

Magistrate Basimane Molwana ordered that Mawela relocate to a place of safety, following allegations that the incident may be gang-related.

Molwana said Mawela is also not to communicate with state witnesses, relocate to a different place of residence and he cannot go back to Forest High until the trial has concluded.

"The accused is to sign at known police station which police station is known to the state, the I.O (investigating officer) and the court on Monday between 6 in the morning and 6 in the evening and Friday between 6am and 6pm.

"The Gauteng Department of Education is ordered that alternative measures be places to the scholastic needs of the accused as there was evidence that this man is writing mid-year exam."

Molwana said the accused might also be placed in a different school.

"The last order is in relation to the court. The clerk of the court is ordered to keep this charge sheet safe."
