Former KZN top cop, 3 others in court for fraud

Former KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni and three others have appeared in court for charges relating to the 2010 FIFA World Cup tender fraud.

Ngobeni, former police officers Navin Madhoe, Ashwin Narainpersad and businessman Thoshan Panday are accused of corruption and fraud totalling R47 million.
They appeared in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday.
Investigative Directorate spokesperson Sindisiwe Twala says the court postponed the case to December in a bid to add a racketeering charge.
“The corruption charges relate to payment made towards a birthday party for Ngobeni’s husband and R2 million bribe offered to (former KZN Hawks head Johan) Booysen to subvert the investigation against Panday and Madhoe.
“Ngobeni further stands accused of failing to disclose the benefits received from Panday as well as charges of defeating the administrative justice. The case was today postponed to the 17th of December to give the Investigative Directorate an opportunity to obtain authorization from the National Director of Public Prosecution Shamila Batohi to bring racketeering charges against the accused.”
