A former Northern Cape MEC for Transport, Roads and Public Works is expected to make a brief appearance in the Upington Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
The suspect, who has been named by the SABC as former ANC Northern Cape chair John Block, has been arrested by the Hawks on charges of fraud.
Block is already serving a 15-year jail term following an earlier conviction on charges of corruption.
Northern Cape Hawks spokesperson Nomthandazo Mnisi says the 55-year-old is linked to tender fraud totalling R51 million.
“It is alleged that in 2003, Babereki Consulting Engineers CC was fraudulently awarded a tender as a structural civil engineer as well as project manager, within the mental health hospital construction project.
“During his tenure as a political head, the accused and the former HOD Ms Patience Mercia Mokhali appointed Babereki Consulting Engineers CC, whose director is Mr Tshegolekae Motaung, though the company did not meet the necessary requirements."
Hawks Provincial Head Brigadier Prince Mashimbye says criminality will be persuade irrespective of the duration in which it happened in order for justice to prevail.
