Former police spokespeman in court
Police spokesman appeared in court on charges of fraud.
A decision on whether to recover money from former KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Vincent Mdunge has yet to be taken, the NPA said on Wednesday.
National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson said no decision had been taken on whether to call in the Asset Forfeiture Unit in a bid to recover money from him.
Mdunge appeared in court on Tuesday on a charge of fraud relating to allegations that he had used a fake matric certificate 25 years ago when he joined the police in 1987.
He resigned last month when the allegation surfaced.
Mdunge, 48, who had attained the rank of colonel, appeared briefly in the Durban Magistrate's court on Tuesday on the charge of fraud.
He was released on bail of R5000 and ordered to hand in his passport.
The Mercury newspaper reported on Wednesday that prosecutor Barend Groen told Magistrate Vanitha Armu that the State was still trying to determine the value of the alleged fraud.
A colonel earns between R500,000 and R600,000 a year.
Groen was quoted as saying that it could amount to millions as Mdunge should never have been employed in the first place.
The calculation would also have to take into account allowances, housing subsidies and other benefits.
Mdunge will next appear in court on November 7.
