Andre Fabricius, 57, was shot around 3am on Tuesday while confronting three robbers who had entered his home, Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said.

Fabricius reportedly woke up after hearing noises and went to investigate.

"He confronted three suspects, one of them was armed. The armed suspect fired shots at the deceased, fatally wounding him," Mogale said.

According to Beeld, Fabricius's wife Rista and 13-year-old son Dario were hit with the gun and tied up during the robbery. The killers fled with two firearms, a television, laptops, a tablet, cellphones, and jewellery.

No arrests had yet been made.

Fabricius was a former captain of the murder and robbery unit in Pretoria. He resigned in 2007 to work as a private investigator at iMvula Risk Management.
