Former top cops fail to have 'blue light' corruption case thrown out

Former police top brass accused of fraud, corruption and money laundering have failed to get reprieve after the Palm Ridge Specialised Crimes Court dismissed a bid to have their case struck off the roll.
Former deputy national police commissioner Bonang Mgwenya, former acting national commissioner Khomotso Phahlane and former Gauteng commissioner Deliwe de Lange are among a group of more than 10 accused that set out have the million-rand matter overturned.
The case made headlines in 2020 amid high-profile arrests linked to the R191 million 'blue lights' case - R65 million was paid to a single service provider while a R22 million payment was halted following investigations.
Mgwenya allegedly to have awarded the irregular tender in exchange for benefits.
The other accused are also believed to have been involved in the tender to issue police emergency warning equipment.
Spokesperson for the NPA’s Investigative Directorate Sindisiwe Seboka says the matter will return to court in August.
