Four injured in blaze at Kgosi Mampuru prison

Four people are being treated in hospital for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Facility in Pretoria.

The blaze ripped through several units at the staff living quarters on Thursday afternoon.
Twenty-six tenants lost most of their belongings in the fire.
Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said alternative accommodation will be arranged for the affected tenants.
“Two units were completely damaged by the fire, while the other four sustained damage to the roof and extensive smoke damage.
“It is suspected that the fire must have started in one of the units and rapidly spread to other units because of the absence of firewalls between the units.”
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
There was at least some good news, with Mabaso saying a tenant’s cat had a lucky escape.
“While conducting search operations in one of the units filled with dense smoke, a firefighter discovered a lifeless cat and immediately brought if out of the unit while conducting cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The cat regained consciousness and paramedics administered oxygen therapy to it.”
