Four SANDF soldiers killed in Upington crash

The South African National Defence Force says four of its members were killed in a crash involving two Samil 50 vehicles.

The two vehicles were involved in a crash about 90km frok Upington while on their way to SA Army CTC for Exercise Vukuhlome on Wednesday.


SANDF spokesperson Andries Mahapa said one Samil vehicle was towing another when the front tyre of vehicle being towed burst.


This causee both vehicles to roll.


"Four soldiers got ejected and the vehickle fell on top of the members, killing them," says Mahape.


"Two members are critically injured and were CASEVAC to Dr Harry Surtie Hospital in Upington, nine members with minor injuries were evacuated to Dr Harry Surtie Hospital as well.


"The families of the deceased members have been notified and military chaplains and social Workers are offering support to the family."


The tragic accident happened on the same day as the freak incident that claimed lives of at least three SA Navy divers after being swept away from their submarine in choppy waters near Cape Town.


The incident occurred off the coast of the town of Kommetjie, as an army submarine en route to Cape Town staged a refuelling operation at sea.


"This incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks our dedicated servicemen and servicewomen face daily in their unwavering commitment to defending our nation," said South African National Defence Union National Secretary Pikkie Greeff


"Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the injured personnel and their families as they endure this challenging time."
