“The 32-year-old suspect is currently under police guard in hospital. The suspects are due to appear in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Thursday,” Van Wyk said in a statement.

Van Wyk said three suspected robbers were killed during a shootout with police at Surry Estate, Orion Road on Monday night.

During a shootout, a Warrant Officer, aged 43, and a woman were shot and wounded, he said in a statement on Tuesday. Both were admitted to hospital in serious but stable conditions.

“Police members responded to a business robbery in Orion Road, Surrey Estate, Athlone and were confronted by armed robbers as they left the supermarket,” Van Wyk said at the time.

“Two suspects were fatally wounded on the scene, and one suspect succumbed in hospital.”

Two firearms, a R5 assault rifle and 9mm Beretta, as well as two hijacked vehicles were seized on the scene, van Wyk said.
