Four zama zamas killed in shootout

A shootout between illegal miners and Gauteng police have led to the deaths of four illegal miners.

Police say the zama zamas were found to be in possession of explosives and firearms.


Spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini says a shootout ensued soon after police confronted the suspects in an open field in Boksburg. 


"When police confronted the zama-zamas, a shootout took place. Four of the miners were killed. One of the police officers is slightly injured in the face.


"We have arrested 15 illegal immigrants, they will be charged with attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and illegal mining. Police have also recovered three firearms."
