Fuel price decrease not that significant: Economist

Consumers can expect lower fuel prices in April 2017, but the weakening rand means the relief is less than what it could have been.

Economist Mike Schussler says there is an under recovery of around 65 cents per litre of petrol and around 50 cents per litre of diesel, but this does not mean a major decrease in fuel prices.

"We will only see about a 25 cents a litre decrase in petrol and around 10 cents per litre of diesel due to the Road Accident Fund (RAF) levy that comes into effect," Schussler says.

Current political developments are also putting some pressure on the Rand that has performed well against all major currencies in recent weeks and this will have an impact on fuel prices going forward.

"The 39 cent Road Accident Fund levy kicks in so we can expect smaller decreases when the fuel prices are announced.
