Fugitive and murder accused Gerhard Jansen van Vuuren was reportedly arrested in Brazil yesterday.

NPA could not immediately confirm the arrest and were still confirming the murder accused's fingerprints and will give more details later.

Jansen van Vuuren was on trial for the murdering his ex-girlfriend  Andrea Venter on 2 May 2011 before fleeing the country. Seven months ago in a court apperance Van Vurren asked to be mentally evaluated.

Venter was killed when Jansen van Vuuren reportedly stabbed her fourteen times. She was murdered in the entrance to her home in a housing complex in Fourways, where she was hiding from him. Van Vuuren also threatened a security guard who tried to intervene.

Van Vuuren, who allegedly committed this gross murder in the presence of more than one witness, then attempted suicide by
stabbing himself in the throat.

Paramedics attended to Van Vuuren, but Venter was declared dead on scene. Van Vurren was denied bail twice in the Magistrates’ Court in Randburg on the grounds that the state expert believed he was dangerous and a flight risk. Due to non-compliance with the requirements of the protection order, Van Vuuren’s legal team applied to the High Court and he was granted bail by Judge Van Oosten. The last time he signed for bail was on the 15th of May this year.
