Fugitive Rabbi Berland's case postponed
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
Court proceedings in the case against fugitive Rabbi Eliezer Berland had to be adjourned early in order for the rabbi to observe Pesach.
Berland, who's wanted in Israel for alleged sexual crimes, is applying for bail in the Randburg Magistrate's Court.
The rabbi's followers were hoping the rabbi would be granted bail on Friday.
This comes after proceedings were delayed this morning due to a miscommunication between the rabbi's lawyer and his followers.
Berland and his followers were upset, because the rabbi has been unable to eat and take his medication during the week.
In the interests of justice, Berland's attorney told the court that he has a constitutional right to religious practice and if denied, the rabbi would die in prison.
The magistrate has now ordered that the rabbi be kept at 'Sun City' prison.
