FULL LETTER: First Women’s Economic Assembly to be held, says Ramphosa
Updated | By Eva Chipa
The inaugural Women’s Economic Assembly, which will take place in Gauteng later this week, is part of governments effort to change the unemployment rate of women in South Africa.
This is according to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The president used his weekly newsletter on Monday to highlight the need for gender equality in the economy.
“The Women’s Economic Assembly will consider how supply chains can be used to benefit women-owned businesses, address the policy impediments to women’s economic empowerment, and improve access to financing for women-owned businesses, especially rural enterprises.”
This follows governments announcement last year that 40% of the public sector procurement is set to go to women-owned businesses.
“As we work towards this target, we are calling on the private sector to make a similar commitment,” wrote Ramaphosa.
