GALLERY: Residents evacuated from flood-hit Cullinan

Tshwane emergency services attended to
flooding in Onverwacht in Cullinan, east of the city due to a broken dam wall.
Spokesperson Charles Mabaso says the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
“A dam wall of a catchment of a quarry broke this morning at around 7am in Onverwacht in Cullinan, leading to a flooding of multiple houses in the area.”
Mabaso says emergency services found some residents on the roofs of their homes to avoid the water below.

“When emergency services arrived on scene some members of the community were found on roof tops to try and keep themselves safe from the water that escaped from the dam.
“All community members were evacuated to safety and no one was harmed as a result of the flooding.”
According to Mabaso an assessment of the affected houses is underway by disaster management, community leaders as well as the owners of the farms where the quarries are situated.
“The Department of Energy and Mineral Resources is being informed as well as Agriculture and Environmental Services Department of the City of Tshwane.
“The department of Social development, is also being activated to conduct a further assessment on their side to determine if there will be relief that the community may require.”
