Gas explosion may be cause of building collapse
A gas explosion may have caused a building to collapse in Midrand, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.
"Police have opened a case in terms of the Explosives Act. It is suspected that the building was damaged as a result of a gas explosion," said Captain Augustinah Selepe.
She dismissed reports that an automated teller machine (ATM) was bombed.
"The ATM was found intact, and two safes were also intact. It was not an ATM bombing," she said.
Two people were injured on Monday when the Ipitombi building collapsed in the early morning hours.
"It was a business premises," said Selepe.
She said police members were patrolling Halfway House when they heard a loud bang, and found that the building had collapsed.
One man was seriously injured, and another man sustained minor injuries, Netcare 911 spokeswoman Santi Steinmann said.
Both were taken to hospital.
